Frequently Asked Questions

How quickly can you help with urgent IT issues?

For remote support, I typically respond within 30 minutes during business hours (9 AM - 5 PM weekdays). If I can't fix it remotely, I offer same-day on-site visits across Melbourne's western suburbs when available. For genuinely urgent issues (business down, can't access critical systems), I can arrange after-hours support.

Do you do house calls or just remote support?

Yes, I do both! Remote support is great for quick fixes (email issues, software problems, printer setup), but I'll come to you if the problem needs hands-on work β€” setting up new equipment, fixing network issues, or when remote just isn't cutting it. Most of my small business clients are in Melbourne's west (Footscray, Yarraville, Werribee, etc.), which makes on-site visits easy.

What if I'm not sure what the problem is?

That's completely normal β€” most people aren't sure what's wrong, just that something isn't working right. Call me and describe what's happening ("my computer is slow", "I can't print", "this website won't load"). I'll ask a few questions, figure out what's going on, and explain the fix in plain English.

We're a small business without an IT department. Can you help us?

Absolutely β€” that's exactly who I work with. Small businesses (5-20 people) who need reliable IT help without hiring a full-time IT person. I handle everything from "the printer certificate expired" to "we need to set up a new laptop" to "why can't anyone access this website?" Think of me as your on-call IT person who actually answers the phone.

Do we need a monthly contract or can we just call when we need help?

Either works. Most of my small business clients pay as they go β€” you call when something's broken, I fix it, you pay for that time. No lock-ins, no monthly minimums. If you need regular help (weekly or monthly check-ins, ongoing projects), we can set up a retainer that gives you priority response and predictable billing. Whatever makes sense for your business.

What kind of IT problems do you help small businesses with?

The everyday stuff that gets in the way of work: printers not working, Wi-Fi dropping out, laptops running slow, email not sending, can't access certain websites, Microsoft 365 setup, new employee onboarding, backing up important files, installing software updates, setting up shared folders, wireless extenders, security certificates, and pretty much anything that makes someone say "the tech isn't working right." If it's stuffed, call me.

Can you help us set up new equipment or migrate to new systems?

Yes. Common projects include: setting up new laptops or desktops, migrating to Microsoft 365, upgrading office Wi-Fi, adding network printers, setting up shared drives and folders, moving to new premises, onboarding new staff members, and setting up backups. I'll handle the technical work and train your team on how to use everything.

How much does IT support cost?

For quick fixes (email issues, printer setup, simple problems), it's $85 flat fee for up to 30 minutes remote support. For more complex issues or on-site visits, it's $130 per hour. I'll give you a heads-up if something is going to take longer than expected β€” no surprise bills. Business setups (Microsoft 365 migration, network setup, multiple devices) get custom quotes upfront.

Do you charge a call-out fee for on-site visits?

No separate call-out fee. If I need to come to you, it's just the standard $130/hour rate, charged from when I arrive. Travel time within Melbourne's western suburbs isn't charged. If you're further out, I'll let you know upfront if there's any travel time involved.

What if you can't fix the problem?

Honestly, that rarely happens β€” but if I genuinely can't solve your problem, you don't pay. If I spend time diagnosing something and determine you need a specialist (e.g., hard drive data recovery lab, Apple hardware repair), I'll charge for the time spent diagnosing and point you to the right person.

Do you offer after-hours or weekend support?

Yes, for urgent issues. Standard rates ($85 quick fix, $130/hour) apply during business hours (9 AM - 5 PM weekdays). After-hours and weekend support is available but costs more β€” I'll quote the after-hours rate before starting any work. Most small business issues can wait until the next business day, but if you're truly stuck, I can help.

Do you support Mac computers or just Windows?

I primarily work with Windows PCs and Microsoft environments, which is what most small businesses use. I can help with basic Mac issues (email setup, Wi-Fi, printing, Microsoft 365), but for specialized Mac problems, I'll refer you to a Mac specialist. If your business is all Mac, I'm probably not your best fit.

How does remote support work?

Simple: you call or email me with the problem. If I can fix it remotely, I'll send you a link to download a small program (like TeamViewer or AnyDesk). You click the link, it gives me a code, I type that code into my computer, and I can see your screen and control your mouse. You can watch everything I do. When we're done, you close the program and I can't access your computer anymore. Takes about 2 minutes to set up.

Is remote support secure?

Yes. Remote support tools use encrypted connections (same security as online banking). You have to actively give me the access code each time β€” I can't just connect to your computer whenever I want. Once the session ends, access is gone. You're in control the whole time and can disconnect anytime.

What areas do you cover?

I'm based in Melbourne's west and primarily service Footscray, Yarraville, Seddon, Altona, Williamstown, Newport, Maribyrnong, Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Point Cook, Tarneit, Truganina, and Laverton. If you're nearby but not on that list, get in touch β€” I probably cover your area. Remote support is available Australia-wide.

Can you help home users or is it just business support?

I help both. Lots of my clients are home users who need help with slow computers, virus removal, Wi-Fi setup, email problems, or just general "my computer is being weird" situations. Same pricing applies: $85 quick fix for simple remote fixes, $130/hour for anything more involved.

Can you help with printer problems?

Yes β€” printers are probably the most common thing I help with. "Printer offline", won't print from certain computers, paper jams, driver issues, need to update security certificates, setting up network printers, connecting new computers to existing printers, or just "the printer is being a printer." I can usually fix printer issues remotely unless it's a hardware problem.

My staff can't access certain websites. Can you help?

Yes. This is usually a browser setting, security software blocking the site, DNS issue, or outdated certificate. I can diagnose and fix these remotely. If one person can access a site but others can't, it's almost always a settings issue. If nobody can access it, it might be a network or firewall problem.

Our Wi-Fi doesn't reach everywhere in the office. Can you help?

Absolutely. Usually this means installing wireless extenders or access points to boost coverage. I'll check your current setup, identify dead zones, and recommend equipment that'll actually work (not just the most expensive option). Then I'll install and configure everything so your Wi-Fi reaches where you need it.

Can you help with Microsoft 365 and email setup?

Yes. Common requests: setting up Microsoft 365 for a new business, migrating from old email systems, adding shared mailboxes, setting up email on new devices, fixing "email not sending" issues, setting up Teams, SharePoint, or OneDrive. I'll make sure everything works and show your team how to use it.

Why not just hire a big IT company with a help desk?

Honestly? For small businesses, big IT companies are often overkill. You get put in a ticket queue, talk to different technicians each time, pay for "business continuity plans" you don't need, and get upsold on services that don't make sense for a 5-person office. With me, you call my mobile, I answer, and I fix your problem. Same person every time. No account managers, no ticket systems, no BS. Just practical help when you need it.

Should we try to fix it ourselves first?

If you want to Google it and give it a go, absolutely β€” I respect that. But if you've been troubleshooting for 20 minutes and getting nowhere, just call. I've probably seen the exact problem before and can fix it in 5 minutes. Your time is worth something too. That said, I'm happy to show you how to fix common issues so you can handle them yourself next time.

Do you try to upsell services we don't need?

No. If your printer needs a certificate update, I'll update the certificate. I won't try to sell you a new printer, a backup system, or a managed services contract. If I see something that could cause problems later (outdated software, security risks), I'll mention it, but I won't pressure you. You're paying for help with your immediate problem, not a sales pitch.

What if we need ongoing IT support?

We can set up a monthly retainer if that makes sense for you. This works well for businesses that need regular help (weekly maintenance, multiple staff members calling with questions, ongoing projects). You get priority response, predictable monthly billing, and I get to know your systems properly. But plenty of my clients just call when they need help β€” whatever works for your business.
